'Ali ibn 'Asim narrated to us, from Sa'id ibn Iyas al-Jurayri, from Abu 'Abd Allah al-Jasri, who said: I entered upon 'A'ishah, and Hafsah bint 'Umar was with her. She said to me: "This is Hafsah, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace." Then she turned to her and said: "I adjure you by Allah to tell me the truth, whether I have spoken a lie or whether I have spoken the truth. Do you know that you and I were with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he fainted? I said to you: 'Do you think he has passed away?' You said: 'I do not know.' Then he regained consciousness and said: 'Open the door for him.'" "Then he fainted again, and I said to you: 'Do you think he has passed away?' You said: 'I do not know.' Then he regained consciousness and said: 'Open the door for him.' I said to you: 'My father or your father?' You said: 'I do not know.' So we opened the door, and it was 'Uthman ibn 'Affan. When the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, saw him, he said: 'Approach.' He leaned over him, and he whispered something to him, the nature of which neither you nor I know. Then he raised his head and said: 'Did you understand what I said to you?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Approach.' He leaned over him again in the same manner, and he whispered something to him, the nature of which we do not know. Then he raised his head and said: 'Did you understand what I said to you?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Approach.' He leaned over him very intensely, and he whispered something to him. Then he raised his head and said: 'Did you understand what I said to you?' He said: 'Yes, my ears heard it and my heart retained it.' Then he said to him: 'Leave.'" Hafsah said: "O Allah, yes," or she said: "O Allah, it is true."
