Musnad Ahmad 1153:2346

Ya'qub narrated to us, he said: My father narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, he said: Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn al-Zubayr narrated to me, from 'Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, from 'A'ishah, the Mother of the Believers, who said: When the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, divided the captives of Banu al-Mustaliq, Juwayriyah bint al-Harith fell into the share of Thabit ibn Qays ibn al-Shammas—or a cousin of his—and she entered into a contract of manumission (kitabah) with him for herself. She was a sweet, beautiful woman; no one saw her but that she captivated him. She came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, seeking his help for her manumission. She said: By Allah, it was only that I saw her at the door of my chamber, and I disliked her, for I knew that he would see in her what I saw. She entered upon him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am Juwayriyah bint al-Harith ibn Abi Dirar, the leader of his people, and I have been afflicted with a trial that is not hidden from you. I fell into the share of Thabit ibn Qays ibn al-Shammas—or a cousin of his—and I have contracted with him for my manumission, so I have come to you to seek your help with my manumission." He said: "Would you like something better than that?" She said: "And what is that, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "I shall pay off your manumission and marry you." She said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "I have done so." She said: The news went out to the people that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had married Juwayriyah bint al-Harith. The people said: "The in-laws of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace!" So they released what was in their hands. She said: Through his marriage to her, one hundred households of Banu al-Mustaliq were set free. I do not know of any woman who was a greater blessing to her people than she was.
