Hashim narrated to us, he said: Al-Layth narrated to us, he said: ‘Uqayl narrated to us, from Ibn Shihab, from ‘Urwah, from ‘Aishah, she said: When someone from her family was afflicted [by death], and the women of the group dispersed from her, and only the women of her close kin remained, she would order a pot of talbinah (barley porridge) to be cooked. Then she would order tharid (a dish of bread and broth) to be prepared, and the talbinah would be poured over the tharid. Then she would say: "Eat from it, for I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, say: 'Indeed, the talbinah brings rest to the heart of the sick person, and it takes away some of the sorrow.'"
