Aswad narrated to us, he said: Sharik narrated to us, from Qays ibn Wahb, from a man from Banu Sawa’ah, who said: I asked Aisha about the character of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. She said: "Do you not read the Quran? 'Indeed, you are of a great moral character' [Al-Qalam: 4]." I said: "Tell me about that." She said: "I made food for him, and Hafsa made food for him. I said to my slave girl: 'Go, and if she comes with the food and places it down before me, then throw the food [away].'" She said: "So she came with the food, and the slave girl threw it, and the bowl fell and broke, and it was on a leather mat." She said: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, gathered it up and said: 'Retaliate, or retaliate'—Aswad was uncertain—'a vessel for your vessel,' and he did not say anything else."
