Musnad Ahmad 2:184

'Affan narrated to us, 'Abd al-Wahid ibn Ziyad narrated to us, al-Hasan ibn 'Ubayd Allah narrated to us, Ibrahim narrated to us, from 'Alqama, from al-Qarth'a, from Qays—or Ibn Qays—a man from Ju'fi, from 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed by, and I was with him, and Abu Bakr, by 'Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud while he was reciting. He stood and listened to his recitation. Then 'Abd Allah bowed and prostrated. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Ask, and you shall be given; ask, and you shall be given." He said: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went on and said: "Whoever it pleases to recite the Quran fresh as it was revealed, let him recite it from Ibn Umm 'Abd." He said: So I set out in the night to 'Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud to give him the glad tidings of what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had said. He said: When I knocked on the door—or he said: When he heard my voice—he said: "What brought you at this hour?" I said: "I came to give you glad tidings of what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said." He said: "Abu Bakr has already preceded you." I said: "If he did, then he is indeed a predecessor in good deeds. We have never raced toward any good deed but that Abu Bakr has preceded us to it."
