Musnad Ahmad 2:19

Abu al-Yaman narrated to us, he said: Shu’ayb informed us, from al-Zuhri, he said: al-Sa’ib ibn Yazid, the nephew of Namir, informed us that Huwaytib ibn ‘Abd al-‘Uzza informed him that ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Sa’di informed him: That he came to ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab during his caliphate. ‘Umar said to him: "Have I not been informed that you manage some of the people’s affairs, and when you are given payment for the work, you dislike it?" He said: I said: "Yes." ‘Umar said: "So what do you intend by that?" He said: I said: "I have horses and slaves, and I am in a good state, and I want my payment to be a charity for the Muslims." ‘Umar said: "Do not do that, for I had intended what you intended. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, used to give me a gift, and I would say: 'Give it to someone poorer than me,' until he gave me some wealth one time. I said: 'Give it to someone poorer than me.'" He said: The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to him: "Take it, possess it, and give charity from it. Whatever comes to you of this wealth while you are neither coveting it nor asking for it, take it; and what is not like that, do not let your soul pursue it."
