Musnad Ahmad 2:204

Isma'il narrated to us, Salamah ibn 'Alqamah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Sirin, who said: I was informed about Abu al-'Ajfa' al-Sulami, who said: I heard 'Umar saying: "Beware of inflating the dowries of women. Beware of inflating the dowries of women." He said: "For if it were an honor in this world or a piety before Allah, the most worthy of it would have been the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, did not give any of his wives, nor did any of his daughters receive, more than twelve *uqiyahs*." "And indeed, a man may be afflicted by the dowry of his wife"—and he said once: "And indeed, a man may be burdened by the dowry of his wife"—until it creates enmity for her in his soul, and until he says: 'I have burdened myself for you with the price of a waterskin.'" He said: "And I was a young Arab boy, born and raised, and I did not know what the price of a waterskin was." He said: "And there is another thing you say about those who are killed in your military expeditions or who die: 'So-and-so was killed as a martyr,' and 'So-and-so died as a martyr,' while he may have loaded the rear of his mount or the side of his riding beast with gold or silver, seeking trade. Do not say that, but say as the Prophet—or as Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him—said: 'Whoever is killed or dies in the way of Allah, he is in Paradise.'"
