Hadith 2:207
Isma'il narrated to us, Ayyub narrated to us, from 'Abdullah ibn Abi Mulaykah, who said: I was with 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar, and we were waiting for the funeral of Umm Aban, daughter of 'Uthman ibn 'Affan, and 'Amr ibn 'Uthman was with him. Then Ibn 'Abbas came, being led by his guide. He said: I think he was informed of Ibn 'Umar's location, so he came until he sat beside me, and I was between them. Suddenly, there was a sound from the house. Ibn 'Umar said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "Indeed, the deceased is punished by the weeping of his family over him." 'Abdullah stated it as an absolute statement. Ibn 'Abbas said: We were with the Commander of the Faithful, 'Umar, until when we were at al-Bayda', he saw a man resting in the shade of a tree. He said to me: "Go and find out who that is." I went, and it was Suhayb. I returned to him and said: "You ordered me to find out for you who that is, and it is Suhayb." He said: "Tell him to join us." I said: "He has his family with him." He said: "Even if he has his family with him" — and perhaps Ayyub said: "Tell him to join us." When we reached Medina, it was not long before the Commander of the Faithful was struck [fatally]. Suhayb came and said: "Oh my brother, oh my companion!" 'Umar said: "Do you not know, or have you not heard — or he said: Do you not know, or have you not heard — that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'Indeed, the deceased is punished by some of the weeping of his family over him'?" As for 'Abdullah, he stated it as an absolute statement, and as for 'Umar, he said: "By some of the weeping." I went to 'A'ishah and mentioned to her what 'Umar said. She said: "No, by Allah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not say that the deceased is punished by the weeping of anyone. Rather, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'Indeed, the disbeliever, Allah (Mighty and Majestic is He) increases his punishment due to the weeping of his family over him.' And it is Allah who makes one laugh and weep, {And no bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another} [Al-An'am: 164]." Ayyub said: And Ibn Abi Mulaykah said: Al-Qasim narrated to me, saying: When 'A'ishah was told of the statement of 'Umar and Ibn 'Umar, she said: "You are narrating to me from people who are neither liars nor accused of lying, but hearing can err."
