'Abd al-Samad narrated to us, Harb—meaning Ibn Shaddad—narrated to us, Yahya narrated to us, Abu Salamah narrated to us, Abu Hurairah narrated to us, he said: While 'Umar ibn al-Khattab was delivering a sermon, a man came and sat down. 'Umar said, "Why are you being detained from the Jumu'ah (Friday prayer)?" The man said, "O Commander of the Faithful, it was only that I heard the call, so I performed ablution, then I came." 'Umar said, "And furthermore! Did you not hear the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say: 'When one of you goes to the Jumu'ah, let him perform ghusl (ritual bath)'?"
