Hadith 2:259
Muhammad ibn Ja‘far narrated to us, Sa‘id ibn Abi ‘Arubah narrated to us, he dictated it to me, from Qatadah, from Salim ibn Abi al-Ja‘d al-Ghatafani, from Ma‘dan ibn Abi Talhah al-Ya‘mari: That ‘Umar stood as a preacher, so he praised Allah and extolled Him, and mentioned the Prophet of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and Abu Bakr. Then he said: "I have seen a vision: as if a rooster pecked me twice, and I do not see that as anything but the approach of my term. And people are commanding me to appoint a successor, but Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, would not let His caliphate and His religion go to waste, nor that which He sent His Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, with. If a matter hastens me, then the caliphate is a matter of consultation among these six men whom the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, died while he was pleased with them. Whichever of them you pledge allegiance to, then listen to him and obey him. I have known that men will challenge this matter, and I fought them with this hand of mine for the sake of Islam; if they do so, then those are the enemies of Allah, the disbelievers, the misguided." "And by Allah, I do not leave behind me anything more important to me than the matter of the *kalalah* (one who leaves no direct heirs). I asked the Prophet of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, about it, and he was never as harsh with me regarding anything as he was with me regarding it, until he poked his hand—or his finger—into my chest—or my side—and said: 'O ‘Umar, the verse that was revealed in the summer, which is at the end of Surat an-Nisa’, is sufficient for you.' And if I live, I will issue a judgment regarding it that no one who reads the Quran or does not read the Quran will disagree upon." Then he said: "O Allah, I call You to witness over the governors of the provinces, for I sent them to teach the people their religion and the Sunnah of their Prophet, to distribute their spoils among them, and to be just with them. And whatever is unclear to them, they should refer it to me." Then he said: "O people, you eat from two trees that I do not see as anything but foul: this garlic and onion. I used to see a man during the time of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, whose scent was found from it, so he would be taken by the hand until he was brought out to al-Baqi‘. So whoever must eat them, let him kill them by cooking." He said: ‘Umar delivered this sermon on Friday, and he was struck on Wednesday, with four nights remaining of Dhu al-Hijjah.
