Musnad Ahmad 2:271

Muhammad ibn Ja'far and Hajjaj narrated to us, they said: Shu'bah narrated to us, from Simak ibn Harb, he said: I heard al-Nu'man—meaning ibn Bashir—delivering a sermon. He said: 'Umar mentioned what had befallen the people regarding worldly goods, and he said: "I have indeed seen the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, spending the day twisting with hunger, not finding even the poorest quality of dates to fill his stomach."
