Khalaf ibn al-Walid narrated to us, Isra'il narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq, from Abu Maysarah, from Umar ibn al-Khattab, who said: When the prohibition of wine was revealed, he said: "O Allah, make clear to us regarding wine a healing clarification." Then this verse which is in Surat al-Baqarah was revealed: "They ask you about wine and gambling. Say: 'In them is great sin'" [Al-Baqarah: 219]. He said: So Umar was summoned and it was read to him, and he said: "O Allah, make clear to us regarding wine a healing clarification." Then the verse which is in Surat an-Nisa' was revealed: "O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated" [An-Nisa': 43]. The caller of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would, when he established the prayer, call out: "Let no intoxicated person approach the prayer." So Umar was summoned and it was read to him, and he said: "O Allah, make clear to us regarding wine a healing clarification." Then the verse in al-Ma'idah was revealed. So Umar was summoned and it was read to him. When it reached: "So will you not desist?" [Al-Ma'idah: 91], Umar said: "We have desisted, we have desisted."
