Hadith 2:308

'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from his father, from 'Abayah ibn Rifa'ah, who said: It reached 'Umar that when Sa'd built the palace, he said: "The sound [of the people] has been cut off." So he sent Muhammad ibn Maslamah to him. When he arrived, he took out his flint and steel, kindled his fire, and bought firewood for a dirham. It was said to Sa'd: "A man has done such and such." He said: "That is Muhammad ibn Maslamah." So he went out to him, and he swore by Allah that he had not said it. He [Muhammad] said: "We will perform what you say on your behalf, and we will do what we were commanded to do." So he burned the door. Then he [Sa'd] came forward offering to provide him with provisions, but he refused. He left and arrived at 'Umar, and he hastened to him. His journey there and back took nineteen [days]. 'Umar said: "Were it not for my good opinion of you, I would have thought that you did not perform our task." He said: "Yes, I did. He sends his greetings, offers his excuses, and swears by Allah that he did not say it." He said: "Did he provide you with any provisions?" He said: "No." He said: "What prevented you from providing me with provisions?" He said: "I disliked that I should order [provisions] for you, so that you would have the cool [comfort], while I would have the heat, and around me are the people of Medina whom hunger has killed. And I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, say: 'A man is not full while his neighbor is hungry.'"
