Hadith 2:79
Ibn Abi ‘Adi narrated to us, from Humayd, from Anas, who said: ‘Umar said: "I agreed with my Lord, the Almighty and Majestic, in three things—or my Lord agreed with me in three things. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, if only you would take the Station [of Ibrahim] as a place of prayer.' Then Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, revealed: 'And take the Station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer.' And I said: 'If only you would veil the Mothers of the Believers, for both the righteous and the wicked enter upon you.' Then the verse of the veil was revealed. And something reached me regarding the Mothers of the Believers, so I went to them and said to them: 'You must refrain [from annoying] the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, or else Allah will replace you with wives better than you, who are Muslim.' Until I came to one of the Mothers of the Believers, and she said: 'O ‘Umar, is there not enough in the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to admonish his wives, that you must admonish them?' So I refrained. Then Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, revealed: 'It may be that if he divorced you, his Lord would give him in your place wives better than you—Muslims, believers, devoutly obedient...' [up to] the end of the verse."
