Musnad Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA)

Hadith 2:94

Abu Mu’awiyah narrated to us, al-A’mash narrated to us, from Ibrahim, from ‘Alqamah, who said: A man came to ‘Umar while he was at ‘Arafat—Abu Mu’awiyah said: And al-A’mash narrated to us, from Khaythamah, from Qays ibn Marwan, that he came to ‘Umar—and said: "I have come to you, O Commander of the Faithful, from Kufa, and I left behind a man there who dictates the Mushafs from his heart." He became angry and swelled up until he almost filled the space between the two sides of his saddle, and he said: "Woe to you, who is he?" He said: "‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud." He continued to calm down and the anger subsided from him until he returned to the state he was in before. Then he said: "Woe to you, by Allah, I do not know of anyone remaining among the people who is more entitled to that than him. I will tell you about that: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to spend the night with Abu Bakr discussing matters concerning the Muslims. One night, he was spending the night with him, and I was with him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out, and we went out with him, and there was a man standing and praying in the mosque. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood listening to his recitation. When we were about to recognize him, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'Whoever is pleased to recite the Qur’an fresh as it was revealed, let him recite it according to the recitation of Ibn Umm ‘Abd.'" He said: Then the man sat down to supplicate, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) began saying to him: "Ask and you shall be given, ask and you shall be given." ‘Umar said: I said: "By Allah, I will go to him early in the morning to give him the good news." He said: So I went to him early in the morning to give him the good news, but I found that Abu Bakr had preceded me to him and given him the good news. By Allah, I never raced him to any good deed but that he preceded me to it.
