Musnad Ahmad 3:119

Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr narrated to us, Ubaydullah—meaning Ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Mawhab—narrated to us, my paternal uncle Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah ibn Mawhab informed me, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: Uthman set out for Makkah as a pilgrim, and Muhammad ibn Ja’far ibn Abi Talib entered upon his wife, and he spent the night with her until morning. Then he went out in the morning, and upon him was the stain of perfume and a saffron-dyed garment that was saturated with color. He caught up with the people at Malal before they departed. When Uthman saw him, he rebuked him and expressed annoyance, and said: "Do you wear saffron-dyed clothing when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has forbidden it?" Ali ibn Abi Talib said to him: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, did not forbid it for him nor for you; he only forbade it for me." *** Abdullah narrated to us, my father and Abu Khaythamah narrated to me, they said: Ya’qub narrated to us. My father said in his narration: He said: The nephew of Ibn Shihab informed us. Abu Khaythamah said: He narrated to me from his uncle, he said: Salih ibn Abdullah ibn Abi Farwah informed me that Amir ibn Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas informed him that he heard Aban ibn Uthman saying: Uthman said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, say: "Do you see, if there were a river at the courtyard of one of you, in which he bathes five times every day, would any of his filth remain?" They said: "Nothing." He said: "Indeed, the prayers remove sins just as water removes filth."
