Musnad Ahmad 3:83

'Ali ibn 'Ayyash narrated to us, Al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us, he said: And Al-Awza'i informed me, from Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, that he narrated to him from Al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah: That he entered upon 'Uthman while he was besieged, and said: "You are the Imam of the public, and what you see has befallen you. I offer you three options; choose one of them: Either you go out and fight them, for you have numbers and strength, and you are upon the truth while they are upon falsehood; or we break a door for you other than the door they are at, so you mount your riding animals and join Makkah, for they will not deem it lawful to fight you while you are there; or you join Ash-Sham, for they are the people of Ash-Sham, and among them is Mu'awiyah." 'Uthman said: "As for going out and fighting, I will not be the first to succeed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in his Ummah by shedding blood. As for going out to Makkah, for they will not deem it lawful to fight me there, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: 'A man from Quraysh will commit heresy in Makkah, upon whom will be half of the punishment of the world.' I will not be him. As for joining Ash-Sham, for they are the people of Ash-Sham and among them is Mu'awiyah, I will not depart from the house of my migration and the neighborhood of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)."
