So do they wait except for like [what occurred in] the days of those who passed on before them? Say, "Then wait; indeed, I am with you among those who wait."

Tafsir

"So do they await"—that is, these people among the polytheists of Mecca and their notables who have been commanded to observe—"except the like of the days of those who passed on before them?"—meaning the like of their events and the descent of the might of Allah, the Exalted, upon them, for they deserve nothing else. The use of "days" to denote "events" is common, as in the expression "the days of the Arabs." This is a well-known figurative usage wherein the time is used to express what occurred within it, just as "Maghrib" is used for the prayer performed during that time. The intended meaning of those referred to by the relative pronoun is the polytheists of the past nations.
"Before them" is attached to "passed on," brought here for emphasis and to hint that they, too, shall pass on just as those before them passed on.
"Say"—as a threat to them—"then wait"—for that—"for I am with you among the waiters"—for it. Thus, the object of the waiting is one and the same in essence, which is the apparent meaning. It has also been permitted that the object is different in essence but unified in genus; that is, "Wait for my destruction, and I am with you among those who wait for your destruction."
