(Just as the word of your Lord has proven true against those who defied [Him] that they will not believe.)

"Just as" — meaning: just as the word of the Lordship of Him, Glorified and Exalted be He, has proven true; or just as there is nothing after the truth except falsehood; or just as they are turned away from the truth—"the word of your Lord has proven true," meaning His decree, "against those who defied," meaning those who rebelled in disbelief and went to its furthest extremes. The intent by them is those mentioned previously, and their pronoun was used to lead to their condemnation through the title of the relative clause, and to intimate the causality.

"That they will not believe" is a substitute for "the word," either a substitute of the whole for the whole, or a substitute of inclusion, based on the word being in the meaning of an infinitive or in the meaning of that which is decreed. The word may also be interpreted as the promise of punishment, in which case this [clause] is in the position of providing the rationale for its truth, meaning: because they, etc.

It has been objected that the conclusion of the verse, according to what has been established regarding those who defied, would then be that the word of punishment has proven true against those rebels because of their rebellion in their disbelief and because they do not believe, which is a repetition devoid of benefit. It is answered that even if it were conceded that there is absolute repetition in the verse, it is an explicit statement of what was known implicitly, and in it is an indication of the nobility of faith, in that the punishment of those who rebel in disbelief is due to the absence of faith.
