Then it will be said to those who had wronged, "Taste the punishment of eternity; are you being recompensed except for what you used to earn?"

His saying, the Exalted: "Then it will be said..." is a conjunction to the [verb] qīla (it was said) which is implicit before "[Have you] now [believed]?" to emphasize the rebuke.
"...to those who have wronged"—that is, those who placed what they were forbidden from—namely, disbelief and denial—in the position of what they were commanded to do—namely, faith and affirmation—or those who wronged their own selves by exposing them to destruction and torment. The relative pronoun is used in place of a pronoun [of reference] to condemn them by means of what is contained in the relative clause, and to indicate that it is the cause of what has befallen them.
"...'Taste the eternal punishment'"—that is, the painful punishment which lasts forever.
"...'Are you being recompensed'"—that is, "Are you being recompensed today..."
"...'except for what you used to earn?'"—that is, except for what you persisted in earning in the worldly life from the various categories of disbelief, among which is the hastening [of punishment] previously mentioned. More than one scholar added in their explanation [that this includes] all types of sins, based on the principle that the disbelievers are held accountable for the secondary legal injunctions (furu’), and thus they are punished for them. However, is the punishment for those sins continuous, following the [punishment for] disbelief, or does it come to an end like the punishment of other sinners? It is said: The manifest view is the latter, and one may reconcile the texts indicating the lightening of the disbelievers' punishment with those that contradict it by saying: The lightened [portion] is the punishment for sins, while that which is not lightened is the punishment for disbelief.
