Al-Humazah: (5) "And what will make you know what..."

(And what will make you know what the Crusher is?) This is to emphasize its gravity by explaining that it is not among those matters that can be grasped by the intellects of creation.

Ali (may Allah honor his countenance), Al-Hasan (with a dissenting report), Ibn Muhaysin, Humayd, and Harun (from Abu ‘Amr) read it as la-yunbadhan (they shall surely be cast), with a dual pronoun referring to the Humazah (the backbiter) and his wealth.

It is also narrated from Al-Hasan la-yunbadhanna, with a damma on the dhal and the omission of the plural pronoun. It has been said that this refers to every backbiter, considering that they are many. It has also been said that it refers to him and his count—meaning his followers and supporters—based on what you have heard regarding his reading there.

From Abu ‘Amr, it is read la-nunbidhannahu, with the nun of majesty, the ha of the accusative, and the nun of emphasis.

Zayd ibn ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) read it as al-hatimah (the Crushing One): "And what will make you know what the Crushing One is?"
