Tafsir of Al-Quraish 106:4

(Who has fed them) on account of those two journeys which they were enabled to undertake by virtue of being neighbors to [the Sacred House]; (against hunger), a severe [state of] hunger they were in before them. It has been said that what is meant is the famine during which they ate carcasses and bones.

(And secured them against fear), a great fear the extent of which cannot be measured. This is the fear of the People of the Elephant, or the fear of being snatched away in their land and during their travels, or the fear of leprosy—as recorded by Ibn Jarir and others on the authority of Ibn Abbas—so that it would not afflict them in their land, as a bounty from the Exalted. [Similarly with] the plague.

It is also reported from him [Ibn Abbas] that he said: "He fed them against hunger due to the supplication of Ibrahim, peace be upon him, when he said: 'And provide them with fruits,' and He secured them against fear, as Ibrahim, peace be upon him, said: 'My Lord, make this city secure.'"

The [preposition] min (from/against) is causal; meaning: He favored them and fed them to remove hunger from them. A genitive addition is assumed [in the interpretation] to make the causality valid, or it may be said that hunger is the instigating cause without needing an addition. Others say it is for substitution, like [the min] in the saying of the Exalted: "Are you satisfied with the life of this world in preference to (min) the Hereafter?"

Al-Kirmani narrated in Ghara'ib al-Tafsir that it was said regarding the saying of the Exalted: "And secured them against fear," that the Caliphate shall not be except among them. This is of the utmost falsehood, as is not hidden.

Al-Musayyibi recited from Nafi': min khawf (against fear) with the concealment (ikhfa') of the nun in the kha'. He narrated that from Sibawayh, and likewise its concealment with the ayn, such as min 'ala, for example. And Allah the Exalted knows best.
