Verse range: 11:118
(Gathered upon the true religion, such that no disbelief would occur from any one of them; however, He, Glorified be He, did not will that, and thus they were not gathered upon the true religion. A parallel to this is His saying, Glorified be He: And if We had willed, We could have given every soul its guidance. This is narrated from Ibn Abbas and Qatadah. It is also narrated from al-Dahhak that the meaning is: had He willed, He would have gathered them upon guidance or upon misguidance.)
And they will continue to differ
(Some of them upon the truth, and some of them upon falsehood.)
Ibn Abi Hatim extracted this from Ibn Abbas. Perhaps the intent is the difference between truth and falsehood regarding the doctrines that are the foundations of religion, based on the context of the passage. It has been said: The meaning is that which encompasses the difference in doctrines, branches, and other matters of religion, due to the absence of anything in the wording that indicates specificity.
