Tafsir of Hud 11:67

67. And the ones who did wrong were seized...

(And the ones who did wrong were seized) — the people of Salih. The transition from the pronoun to the noun is to record their injustice against them and to signal that it was the cause of the torment descending upon them.

(The Shout) — meaning the shout of Gabriel, or a shout from the heavens containing every thunderbolt and terrifying sound. According to what is in al-Bahr, it is a noun of instance (fa'lah) derived from the act of shouting (sayh). It is said: "He shouted (saha), he shouts (yasiho)," meaning he made a loud sound. Its origin, as al-Raghib stated, is the splitting of sound, from the saying: "The wood or the garment split (insaha)," when it tears and a sound is heard from it; and it is said, "The garment was torn (suyyih)." Sometimes "the Shout" is used to express terror.

In al-A'raf, it is mentioned: (So the earthquake seized them). It has been said: Perhaps it occurred immediately following the Shout, which caused the agitation of the air. Our discussion regarding that has already preceded.
