{لهم عذاب في الحياة الدنيا ولعذاب الآخرة أشق وما لهم من الله من واق}

(For them is a severe punishment in the worldly life) through killing, captivity, and all other afflictions that befall them; for these only strike them as a punishment from Allah the Exalted for their disbelief. As for the occurrence of such things to a believer, it is by way of reward and the elevation of ranks.

(And the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe) than that, due to its intensity and its eternity.

(And they have no protector from Allah)—meaning from His punishment, glorified be He.

(From any guardian) to shield them from that. The first "min" is connected to waqin (protector), and the second is emphatic (lit. redundant for emphasis). It does not harm that the object of the preposition is placed before it, because a redundant letter has no grammatical ruling.

It is also permitted that the first "min" be a dharaf mustaqir (established adverbial phrase) acting as a hal (state) for waqin, with its connection being omitted. The meaning is: They have no protector or guardian against the punishment of Allah the Exalted, while that protector would have been from His side and His mercy; on this reading, "min" is for clarification (tabyin).

It is also permitted that it be "void" (laghw), connected to the verbal meaning inherent in the adverbial phrase "for them" (lahum), with the sense of initiation (ibtida'). The meaning then is: Nothing of Allah’s mercy has reached them to protect them from the punishment.
