15:14

"And even if We opened to them" (meaning: to these obstinate demanders of signs) "a gate from heaven" (the apparent meaning is a gate, not one of its customary gates, as has been said) "and they continued therein" (meaning: in that gate) "ascending"

**(Meaning: they would ascend according to what We facilitate for them, seeing the angels and wonders within it throughout their day, seeking clarity on what they observe, as is indicated by [the verb] "continued" (ẓallū), for it is said: "He continued (ẓalla) doing such-and-such," if he did it during the day, when a person has a shadow (ẓill). In [the book] Al-Baḥr, it was suggested that ẓalla means "became," but while this is contrary to the origin, there is no need for it. In any case, the plural pronoun refers to the demanders [of signs], which is the apparent interpretation narrated from Al-Hasan, and it is the position held by Al-Jubba’i and Abu Muslim. Ibn Jurayj narrated from Ibn Abbas—may Allah be pleased with them both—that it refers to the angels, and this was also narrated from Qatada: meaning, the angels whom they demanded to be brought continued ascending through that gate while they [the people] watched them in the most complete manner. Al-A‘mash and Abu Ḥaywah recited it as (ya‘riju-na) with a kasra on the ra’, which is the dialect of Hudhayl for the word ‘urūj, meaning to ascend.)**
