Tafsir of Al-Hijr 15:34

(He said): An inauguration, as previously mentioned.

(Then get out of it): It is said: The apparent meaning is that the pronoun refers to the heaven, even if no mention of it preceded, and this is supported by the manifest wording of the Almighty: "So descend from it."

Others said it refers to the company of angels (peace be upon them), and his departure from heaven follows necessarily, for his mere withdrawal to a side away from them is not considered a departure in the common understanding, and that alone is sufficient as an indication.

Others said it refers to Paradise, due to the saying of the Almighty: "Dwell, you and your spouse, in Paradise," and because the whispering occurred within it. This was refuted by stating that the whispering took place after the command to depart.

(For indeed, you are the Rajim [cast out]): Meaning, driven away from all goodness and honor, for whoever is driven away is pelted with stones; thus the speech is a form of metonymy. Others said it means a devil pelted with shooting stars, and it is a threat of being stoned by them.

This statement includes the response to his false premise, as it implies his wretched state. It is as if it were said: The factor preventing you from prostrating is your wretchedness, your evil end, and your distance from goodness, despite the nobility of the element [fire] you claim for yourself.

It is said that it includes this because it is known from it that nobility lies in the honoring and dignifying by Allah Almighty; thus, what he claimed of his superiority was invalidated, for Allah Almighty distanced him and disgraced him, while He drew Adam (peace and blessings be upon him) near and honored him.

Others said it includes the response through silence, as it is said: "The response to what one is not pleased with is silence."

In the interpretation of al-Rajim as "the one pelted with shooting stars," there is a subtle indication that since the accursed one boasted of fire, he was punished by it in this world; he is like: The worshipper of fire who loves it, while it burns him.
