Tafsir of Al-Hijr 15:36

"(He said, 'My Lord, then respite me')": Give me time and delay me, and do not cause me to die. The particle fa (then) relates to a deleted element implied by the discourse—that is: "Since You have made me an outcast, then respite me (until the day they are resurrected)."

(Meaning: Adam, peace be upon him, and his offspring for the recompense.) He intended by that to find an opportunity to lead them astray and take his revenge upon them. It is said: And to be saved from death, for there is no death after the Resurrection. This is what is narrated from Ibn Abbas and al-Sudi. It is as if he, upon him be the curse, sought the postponement of his death for that reason, and was not satisfied with what the Glorified One indicated in [another verse regarding] the postponement, because it is possible that the postponement of [his] punishment is like that of other disbelievers whose punishments have been deferred until the Hereafter.
