(That is, from granting refuge to any of them and from standing between us and them, or from hosting any of them).
The interrogative particle (Hamza) is for denunciation, and the conjunction "Wa" (And), according to more than one commentator, is for coordination with a suppressed clause—meaning: "Have We not previously cautioned you and forbidden you from that?" For they used to harass every stranger with evil, and he, peace be upon him, would forbid them from that to the extent of his ability, and he would stand between them and those they targeted. They had indeed forbidden him from engaging in such conduct. It is as if they were saying: "The scandal and disgrace you mentioned have only come upon you because of your own actions, not ours; for had you not interfered in what you take upon yourself, this would not have befallen you." This was said when they saw that he would not desist from his position.
