Al-Hijr: (83) "So the shriek seized them at the hour of the morning."

The consequential particle (fa) in His saying, "So the shriek seized them at the hour of the morning," is used to affirm the first [narrative]. In Surah al-A'raf, it occurs as, "So the earthquake seized them," and the two are reconciled by stating that the shriek leads to the earthquake, or that the former is a metaphor for the latter.

There is a difficulty concerning the qualification of "at the hour of the morning" (musbiheen) in light of the reports detailing their states after he, peace be upon him, had warned them of the descent of the punishment—namely, that when the forenoon of the fourth day arrived, they embalmed themselves with aloe and shrouded themselves with al-ifta' (a type of garment), then the shriek from heaven came to them and their hearts were severed by it. This implies that the seizure by the shriek occurred after the forenoon, not at the hour of the morning.

It is answered that if the report is authentic, "at the hour of the morning" (musbiheen) is understood as indicating that the shriek occurred during the day rather than the night, or that "morning" (al-subh) is applied to an extended period of time reaching into the forenoon. It is also said that one may reconcile the verse and the report in the same manner as the two verses were reconciled earlier. In this [latter explanation] there is reflection, so reflect.
