96 **(Those who set up with Allah another god)** meaning: they took a god whom they worship along with Him, Exalted is He.

The use of the imperfect tense (in yaj'alūn) is to bring to mind the past state. Describing them in this manner serves to console the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and to minimize the gravity of the matter for him, may peace and blessings be upon him, by pointing out that they did not limit themselves to mocking him, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, but rather dared to commit the greatest offense, which is associating others with Him, Glorified is He.

(But they will come to know) what they did and what they left undone; in this there is a threat that is not hidden. It is stated in al-Bahr that this is a threat to them of retribution for their mockery and their polytheism in the Hereafter, just as they were requited in the worldly life.
