Tafsir
Verse range: 16:109
(La jarama annahum fi al-akhirati hum al-khasirun - 109)
It is undoubtedly certain that they, in the Hereafter, are the losers. This is because they squandered their capital, which is their lifespan, and spent it on that which leads only to eternal punishment. To Allah, the Exalted, belongs the one who said:
If your capital is your life, guard it well, Lest you spend it on that which is not obligatory.
It appears in another verse as al-akhsarun (the greatest losers). This is due to the requirements of the context, as is not hidden to those who examine it, or because it occurred in the endings of the verses here [in this surah] in adherence to the alif, like al-kafirin and al-ghafilin. Thus, it was expressed in that form to observe that [rhyme/rhythm], which is a trivial matter. The discussion regarding la jarama has already preceded, so recall it; for there is nothing in [the phrase] la ‘ahda min qidam (not a recent covenant/discussion).
