Tafsir of An-Nahl 16:118

(And upon those who Judaized) specifically, to the exclusion of others among the ancients, (We forbade what We related to you before), meaning before the revelation of this verse. That refers to His saying in Surah al-An'am: (And to those who are Jews We forbade every animal with undivided hoofs) [al-An'am: 146]. It is apparent that "before" is related to "related," though it is permissible for it to be related to "We forbade," with the implied genitive construction being what has passed as well.

It is possible to construe "before" as the forbidding of what was forbidden to your nation, and this is considered more appropriate according to what has been said. It is also permissible for the speech to be of the category of tanaazu' (contention/mutual governance). This is a confirmation of what preceded regarding the limitation of prohibitions to what was detailed, by refuting the contradictory lies of the Jews and their fabrication in that regard; for they used to say: "We are not the first upon whom these were forbidden; rather, they were forbidden to Noah, Abraham, and those after them, until the matter reached us."

(And We did not wrong them) by that prohibition, (but they used to wrong themselves) [118], as they committed that for which they were punished, just as the words of the Exalted alerted them: (So for injustice on the part of the Jews, We forbade them [certain] good things which had been lawful to them) [an-Nisa: 160]. In this is an alert regarding the difference between them and others in the matter of prohibition, and that just as it may be for a harm [by nature], it may also be for a punishment.
