Tafsir of An-Nahl 16:42

"(Those who have patiently endured) what has befallen them of oppression, without retreating in their steps; and endured the separation from their homeland, which is the Sanctuary of Allah (Glorified be He)—beloved to every believer, let alone those for whom it was their birthplace; and endured the prospect of exile among people who are strangers in lineage and to whom they are not accustomed; and other hardships besides these. The grammatical position of the relative pronoun [al-ladhina] is in the accusative case, assuming the implied verb 'I mean' [a'ni], or in the nominative case, assuming the implied subject 'they' [hum]. It is also permissible for it to be a substitution, an explication, or an adjective for [the previous] 'those who migrated.'

(And upon their Lord they rely)

Being cut off from all others, turning away from everything besides Him, and entrusting the entire affair to Him, as indicated by the omission of the object of reliance. It is said: the prepositional phrase is placed first to signify exclusivity. The view that this placement is merely for the sake of observing the rhythmic ending of the verses is not definitive. The present tense form [of the verb] indicates either continuity or the summoning of that wondrous image into the mind. The sentence is either coordinated with the relative clause [of the preceding verse] or serves as a circumstantial state [hal] for the pronoun in 'patiently endured'."
