Tafsir of Al-Isra 17:48

"Observe how they strike" — Ibn Atiyyah said: It does not correspond with His saying, the Exalted: "Observe how they strike for you comparisons" (meaning they likened you, saying at one time he is a poet and at another a madman, despite their knowledge of the contrary).

"So they have strayed" in all of that from the path of argumentation.

"So they cannot find a way" (a path) to any critique that could be accepted by anyone. Thus, they fall into inconsistency and confusion, and they bring forth that which no one who hears it can doubt its falsehood, or a way to the truth and guidance. In this, there is a threat and a consolation for the Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, which is not hidden.
