Al-Isra: (90) "And they said, 'We will not believe...'"

"And they said" — upon the manifestation of their inability and the clarity of their defeat through the miraculous nature of the revelation and other overwhelming miracles, offering excuses for things that wisdom does not necessitate to occur, nor does the proof of the claim depend upon them, some of which are intellectual impossibilities — "We will not believe you until you cause to gush forth" (to-fajjira), with the lightened jīm from the bab of naṣara (intransitive/transitive), and this is how the Kufans read it, meaning "to open." The rest of the seven recited it as "tufajjira" (to-fajjira) from fajjara with the tashdīd, where the doubling is for intensity, not for transitivity.

Al-A'mash and Abdullah ibn Muslim ibn Yasar recited it as "tufjira," from the quadriliteral afjara, which is a dialectal variation of fajjara.

"For us from the earth" — meaning the land of Makkah, due to the scarcity of its water, so the definite article refers to the specific place — "a spring" (yanbūʿan). This is derived from nabaʿa al-māʾ (water gushed forth), like yaʿbūb (a rushing stream) from ʿabba al-māʾ when it surges and its waves increase; the yāʾ is added for emphasis. The intent is a fountain whose water never runs dry. Ibn Abi Hatim recorded from al-Suddi that the yanbūʿ is the river that flows from the spring, while the former (first interpretation) is narrated from Mujahid, and he suffices as an authority.
