Tafsir of Maryam 19:14

"And dutiful to his parents": Meaning, one who is exceedingly dutiful and kind to them. The apparent meaning is that it is a conjunction [coordinated] with the predicate of kana (was). It has also been said that it is of the category of the verse: "I fed them with straw and cold water," meaning, "We made him dutiful," which corresponds to its counterpart in the narrative concerning Jesus, peace be upon him. Al-Hasan, Abu Ja'far (in one narration), Ibn Nuhayk, and Ibn Mujliz read "and dutiful" (birran) in both places with a kasra on the ba (as birran), meaning "possessor of dutifulness."

"And he was not a tyrant": Meaning, arrogant, haughty, refusing to accept the truth and submit to it, or overbearing toward the creation. It has been said that the tyrant (al-jabbar) is he who does not see anyone as having a right over him. It is reported from Ibn Abbas that it is he who kills and strikes out of anger.

Al-Raghib said: When describing a human, it is said of one who compensates for his own deficiency by assuming a status of overestimation that he does not deserve.

"Disobedient": Meaning, one who defies the command of his Master, the Almighty and Majestic. It has been said it means disobedient to his father. It is on the scale of fa’ul. It has also been said it is fa’il. The intention is the intensiveness of the negation, not the negation of intensiveness.
