Tafsir of Maryam 19:19

He said, "I am only a messenger of your Lord," (the One who possesses your affair, looks after your interests, and in whom you sought refuge. I am not someone from whom you should expect the evil you imagined. It is narrated from Ibn Abbas that when she said, "I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you," Gabriel—peace be upon him—smiled and said, "I am only a messenger of your Lord,") "(to grant you a pure boy.)" That is, to be the cause of granting him by blowing into the garment. It is also permissible that this is a narration of the words of the Exalted Lord, by estimating a verb, meaning: "Your Lord, who said: 'I have sent this angel to grant you...'" This is supported by the reading of Shaybah, Abu al-Hasan, Abu Bahriyah, al-Zuhri, Ibn Manadhir, Ya'qub, al-Yazidi, Abu 'Amr, and Nafi' in one narration, with the ya (li-yahaba—to grant), for its subject is the pronoun of the Exalted Lord. As for what has been said—that the origin of li-yahaba is li-ahaba (to grant), and the hamzah was changed into a ya because of the kasrah preceding it—this is an unjustified overreach without any necessity.

In some copies of the Quran, it reads: "He commanded me to grant you a boy."

(Pure) — free from sins. It is also said: a prophet. It is also said: one who grows in goodness, meaning one who progresses from age to age in virtue and righteousness. Thus, purity (zaka) encompasses both moral and physical growth.

Some have used the angel’s message to her as evidence for her prophethood. This has been answered by stating that a message for such a purpose does not necessitate prophethood.
