Tafsir
Verse range: 19:30
(He said: "Indeed, I am the servant of Allah...")
"He said": This is a continuation built upon a question that arose from the context of the noble arrangement [of the verses], as if it were asked: "What happened after that?" So it was said: ‘Isa, upon him be peace, said: "Indeed, I am the servant of Allah."
It is narrated that he, upon him be peace, was nursing; when he heard what they said, he stopped nursing, turned his face toward them, leaned upon his left side, gestured with his index finger, and spoke what he spoke. It is also said that Zakariyya, upon him be peace, approached him to prompt him to speak, and he said that.
He mentioned his servitude to Allah the Exalted first because acknowledging this is, as it is said, the first of the stations for those who tread the path [to Allah]. In it is a refutation of those who claim his divinity. In everything he said is an indication of his mother’s innocence, because it implies his selection [by Allah], and Allah, glory be to Him, is too exalted to choose the child of adultery, and that is among the established facts for them. In this lies an exaltation of his mother, peace be upon them both, greater than an explicit declaration. It is also said [this is] because the Exalted does not distinguish with a child described by what was mentioned, except through a mother who is innocent and chosen.
There is a difference of opinion regarding whether, after he spoke what was mentioned, he continued to speak like the habit of men, or did he not speak until he reached the age at which children usually speak? His being counted among those who spoke in the cradle and then did not speak until the customary time is apparent in the latter.
(And He has given me the Scripture...)
The apparent meaning is that it is the Gospel. It is also said that it is the Torah, and it is said that it is both of them together.
(And He has made me a prophet...)
