Maryam: (43) "O my father, indeed..."

Then he invited him to follow him, so that he might guide him to the manifest truth, as he [his father] was not fortunate in divine knowledge, nor capable of sound contemplation. He began his invitation with the aforementioned appeal for affection, saying: "O my father, indeed there has come to me of knowledge that which has not come to you." He did not characterize his father with excessive ignorance, even though he was at its furthest extreme, nor did he characterize himself with superior knowledge, even though that was the case. Rather, he presented himself in the guise of one tender toward him, who is more familiar with the conditions of the path they both tread. Thus, he inclined him toward himself with gentleness, saying: "So follow me; I will guide you to an even path," meaning a straight path that leads to the highest of objectives, diverging from the misguidance that leads to the precipices of ruin and destruction.

His saying, "there has come to me," is clear that this dialogue took place after he had been made a prophet. As for what came to him, it is said: it is the knowledge of what is necessary for Allah the Exalted, what is impossible regarding Him, and what is permissible, in the most perfect and complete manner. It is also said: it is the knowledge of the affairs of the Hereafter, its rewards, and its punishments. And it is said: it is the knowledge that encompasses all of that. Then, he discouraged him from what he was upon by depicting it in a form that every rational person would disapprove of, by explaining that, despite being entirely devoid of any benefit, it is something that attracts great harm, for it is, in reality, the worship of Satan.
