{And they say, "The Most Merciful has taken [for Himself] a son."}

This is a recounting of the transgression of those who claimed that Uzayr is the son of God, that Christ is the son of God, and that the angels are the daughters of God—from among the Jews, the Christians, and the Arabs. Exalted and elevated is His status far above what they say.

This follows the recounting of the transgression of those who worshipped what they worshipped besides the Almighty, the Majestic, by way of connecting the narrative to the narrative. The pronoun refers to those whom you have come to know, even if they are not mentioned explicitly, due to the clarity of the matter. It has been said that it refers to the criminals; it has been said to the disbelievers; it has been said to the wrongdoers; and it has been said to the servants [of God], as indicated by the mention of the two groups: the righteous and the criminals. In this is the attribution of what some of them did to the whole, even though they did not all consent to it; a discussion regarding this has already preceded.
