Surah Maryam 19:91



ﲲ ﲳ ﲴ ﲵ

That they attribute to the Most Merciful a son.

( أن دعوا للرحمن ولدا )

The particle an (that) implies the causal lam (for the purpose of). Its grammatical position after the omission is in the accusative case (nasb) according to Sibawayh, and in the genitive case (jarr) according to al-Khalil and al-Kisa’i. It serves as the cause for the "enormity" ('idd) contained within the phrase "from Him" (minhu), but it does so in consideration of what the circumstantial qualifier (hal) indicates—namely, the saying of the Exalted:
