Al-Baqarah: (200) "So when you have completed your rites..."
(So when you have completed your rites) meaning: when you have performed your Hajj-related acts of worship and finished them, (then remember Allah as you remember your fathers) meaning: just as you used to remember them upon finishing your Hajj by boasting about their glories.
It is narrated from Ibn Abbas—may Allah be pleased with both of them—that he said: The people of the Pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah) would sit after Hajj and spend their entire day remembering the days of their fathers and counting their lineages, so Allah Almighty revealed this.
(Or with even greater remembrance): "Or" is either in the genitive case, conjoined to "remembrance" (dhikr), treating the remembrance as the one who remembers metaphorically. The meaning is: "And remember Allah with a remembrance like your remembrance of your fathers, or with a remembrance stronger and more eloquent than that." Or it is conjoined to that to which it (the remembrance) is genitively related, based on the school of the Kufans who permit conjoining to a genitive pronoun without repeating the preposition in expansive speech; the meaning being: "Or like the remembrance of a people whose remembrance is stronger than yours."
Or it is in the accusative case, conjoined to "your fathers," and "remembrance" is from the passive verb, meaning: "Or like your remembrance, which is more mentioned than your fathers." Or it is based on an implied element indicated by the meaning: "Let your remembrance of Allah Almighty be stronger than your remembrance of your fathers," or "Be stronger in your remembrance of Allah Almighty than you are of your fathers." Such is what has been said.
In Al-Bahr, it is chosen that (ashadda - stronger) is in the accusative case as a state (hal) of "remembrance" (dhikran), which is the object of "remember" (udhkuru). If it were to follow it, it would be an adjective for it. The postponement of "remembrance" is justified because it acts as a concluding pause, and to remove the unease of repetition; for had it been placed first, the structure would have been: "So remember Allah with a remembrance like your remembrance of your fathers, or remember with a remembrance that is stronger."
It is argued against this that the apparent meaning in this construction would be to say "or stronger" without "remembrance," by it being conjoined to "like your remembrance," serving as an adjective for the implied remembrance, and that what is sought is the remembrance characterized by intensity, not seeking the state of intensity regarding what it relates to, or the state of what follows it.
