(He said) is a resumption [of the narrative] based on a question that arose from the report that He, the Exalted, dealt with him as if it were said: What did He command him after that? It was said: He said to him and to his wife: (Descend from it, all of you) meaning: descend from Paradise to the Earth together. It is also said: The address is to him, peace be upon him, and to Iblis, may the curse be upon him, for he entered Paradise after it was said to him: "Get out of it, for you are an outcast," for the sake of whispering.
Their address in the first interpretation is through His, the Exalted’s, saying: (Some of you are enemies to others), because they are the origin of the offspring and the source of the children; therefore, the enmity is, in reality, between their children. This is the opposite of addressing the Jews and attributing what their forefathers did to them. The sentence is in the position of a state, meaning: being enemies to one another regarding matters of livelihood and the desires of the souls. According to the second [interpretation], it is apparent due to the manifestation of enmity between Adam, peace be upon him, and Iblis, may the curse be upon him, and likewise between the offspring of Adam, peace be upon him, and the offspring of the accursed one. From this, it is said: The pronoun refers to Adam and his offspring, and Iblis and his offspring.
Some claimed it refers to Adam, Iblis, and the serpent, but the relied-upon view is the first, supported by His, the Exalted’s, saying: (Then if there comes to you guidance from Me), etc., meaning: any Prophet I send to you and any Book I reveal to you. (Then whoever follows My guidance) — He placed the noun in place of the pronoun, along with adding it to His pronoun, the Exalted, to honor it and emphasize the necessity of following it. Al-Tabarani and others reported from Abu al-Tufayl that the Prophet (peace be upon him) read: "Then whoever follows guidance," (he will not go astray) in this world, (nor will he be miserable) in the Hereafter.
Some interpreted the "guidance" as the Quran, based on what Ibn Abi Shaybah, Abd ibn Humayd, Ibn Abi Hatim, Al-Hakim (who authenticated it), and Al-Bayhaqi in Shu'ab al-Iman reported through various chains from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, who said: "Allah, the Exalted, protects the follower of the Quran from going astray in this world or being miserable in the Hereafter," then he recited the verse. A group reported it from him, attributed to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) with the wording: "Whoever follows the Book of Allah, Allah the Exalted will guide him away from misguidance in this world and protect him from an evil reckoning on the Day of Resurrection."
