"And I know not, perhaps it is a trial for you" (That is: I do not know; perhaps the delaying of your punishment is a form of luring you [into destruction] and an increase in your tribulation, or a test for you, to see how you act.) The sentence "perhaps it is..." and what follows is in the position of the direct object, following the pattern of what preceded it. The Kufans treat la‘alla (perhaps) the same as hal (whether) in that it functions as a suspending particle. Abu Hayyan said: "I do not know of anyone who held the view that la‘alla is among the tools of suspension, even though that is apparent within it."

It is reported from Ibn Abbas, in one narration, that he recited adriy (أدريَ) with a fatha on the ya in both instances, treating it by analogy to the ya of annexation (possessive ya) in pronunciation, even though the lam of the verb is not vocalized with a fatha except when governed by an operative factor. Ibn Mujahid rejected the vocalization of this ya with a fatha.

"And an enjoyment for a time." (That is: And a granting of enjoyment for you, and a delay until a determined term which His will—built upon supreme wisdom—necessitates, so that it may be a proof against you.) It is said that the intent of "the time" is the Day of Badr, and it is said that it is the Day of Resurrection.
