Tafsir of Al-Anbiya' 21:64

"Then they returned to their own selves"

They reflected, contemplated, and recalled that whatever is unable to ward off harm from its own self, nor able to inflict harm upon the one who broke it in any way whatsoever, it is impossible that it could be capable of warding off harm from another or bringing about a benefit for him. How, then, could it deserve to be worshipped?

"And they said"—meaning, some of them said to others among themselves—"Indeed, it is you who are the wrongdoers."

That is, by worshipping that which cannot speak, as stated by Ibn Abbas. Or [they are wrongdoers] for asking Ibrahim (peace be upon him) questions and turning away from asking them [the idols], even though they are your gods, as mentioned by Ibn Jarir. Or [they are wrongdoers] for the very act of questioning Ibrahim (peace be upon him), as it contained a rebuke that leads to accountability, as has been said. Or [they are wrongdoers] for your negligence regarding your gods and failing to protect them. Or [they are wrongdoers] for worshipping the small [idols] alongside this great one—both of these interpretations were stated by Wahb. Or [they are wrongdoers] because you accused Ibrahim (peace be upon him) while the calamity lay upon the neck of the great one, as stated by Muqatil and Ibn Ishaq. The restriction [implied by "indeed, it is you"] is relative to Ibrahim (peace be upon him).
