(87) They will say, "To Allah." Say: . . . . .

(They will say, "To Allah.") Abu Amr and Ya'qub recited this without the lam (preposition "to") here and in what follows. It is said that in the preceding instances, there was no recitation omitting the lam. Reciting without the lam adheres to the literal wording of the question, while reciting with the lam adheres to the meaning. Both are permissible. If one were asked, "Who is the owner of this house?" and the reply was, "Zayd," it would be an answer to the wording of the question. If the reply were, "To Zayd" (li-Zayd), it would be an answer to the meaning, because the meaning of "Who is the owner of this house?" is "To whom does this house belong?" Both forms are present in their speech. The author of al-Matla' recited:

When asked, "Who is the Lord of the valleys and the villages, and the Lord of the smooth, swift horses?" I said, "To Khalid."

Al-Zajjaj also cited:

The questioners asked, "For whom did you dig?" and the informants replied, "For a minister."

(Say,) by way of silencing and rebuking them, (Will you not then fear?) That is: Do you know this, yet do not protect yourselves from His punishment by abandoning action according to what this knowledge necessitates? For you disbelieve in Him, the Exalted, deny what He has informed you of regarding the Resurrection, and attribute partners to Him, Glorified be He.
