(And indeed, We are able to show you what We have promised them) of punishment,

(but We do not do so; rather, We delay it for them because We know that some of them, or some of their descendants, will believe.)

Or it is because We do not punish them while you are among them. It has been said that He, glory be to Him, did show him that, and it refers to what befell them on the day of Badr or the conquest of Mecca. The Sheikh al-Islam said: Its remoteness is not hidden, for the obvious meaning is that the punishment they deserve—the one that was promised—is a massive, eradicating punishment that does not manifest at the hands of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, due to the wisdom that calls for [delaying] it.
