Al-Mu'minun: (97) And say, "My Lord, I seek refuge in You..."

(And say, "My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the promptings of the devils")

That is, from their deceptive whispers that urge [one] against what you have been commanded. It is the plural of hamzah, and al-hamz signifies poking and pushing with the hand or otherwise. From this is the spur (mihmāz) of the animal trainer—the piece of iron tied to the back of his foot with which he prods the beast to make it hasten or leap. Applying this to whispering and urging toward sins is due to the manifest similarity between them. The plural form is used either to denote frequency, the variety of whispers, or the multiplicity of the devils.
