{And I seek refuge in You, my Lord, that they be present [with me]}

Meaning: from their presence around me in any state or condition. The state of prayer and the recitation of the Quran is specified [as a time for seeking refuge], as narrated from Ibn Abbas—may Allah be pleased with both of them—and the state of the arrival of the appointed time of death, as narrated from Ikrimah; because these are the states most worthy of seeking refuge from, especially the latter state. For this reason, it was said: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the [agony of] extraction at the time of extraction." Ibn Zayd held the view of generality.

In the command to seek refuge from their promptings (hamazat) after the command to seek refuge from their presence, there is an exaggeration in warning against any involvement with them. The repetition of the verb, along with the repetition of the address [to the Lord], is to demonstrate the perfection of concern for what has been commanded, and to display the utmost earnestness in supplication.

It is recommended to seek refuge from the promptings of the devils and their presence when intending to sleep. Ahmad, Abu Dawood, an-Nasa'i, and at-Tirmidhi—who classified it as hasan—narrated from Amr ibn Shu'ayb, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) used to teach us words to say when sleeping against fright: "In the name of Allah, I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger, His punishment, the evil of His servants, and from the promptings of the devils, and that they be present [with me]."
